What Does a Marketing Agency Actually Cost?
Most agencies won't talk about money until they've had three calls with you. We think that's a waste of everyone's time. This guide covers what the market actually charges across eight disciplines so you walk into any agency conversation knowing what to expect.
Why We Publish This
Agencies stay quiet about pricing for a few reasons: they don't want competitors to undercut them, they're afraid of scaring off prospects, and pricing genuinely varies so much that any number risks being misleading.
All of that is legitimate. But it creates a problem: you go into a conversation blind, spend three weeks in a sales process, and only find out on week four that the budget is completely misaligned.
This guide doesn't tell you what MIKEADV charges. It tells you what the market charges. The real ranges, the real cost drivers, and the real questions to ask any agency before you commit.
Logo & Brand Identity
The range here is enormous, and intentionally so. A Fiverr logo and a Pentagram rebrand are technically both "logo design." What you're actually buying at different price points is completely different.
At $500–$2,000 you get a logo. Someone draws a mark, sends you PNG files, and you move on. At $3,000–$15,000 you get a brand system. At $20,000–$500,000+ you get brand strategy, audience research, competitive positioning, and a full identity system that scales across every surface for the next 20 years.
The question isn't how much does a logo cost. The question is: what does your brand need to do, and what is it worth if it does it well?
See Our Logo Work →- Research depth. Audience interviews, competitive audits, and positioning workshops add significant time before a single mark is drawn.
- Number of concept directions. Each additional route represents days of strategic and creative work, not just a different drawing.
- System complexity. A logo is one file. A brand system is dozens, lockups, sub-brands, icon libraries, motion guidelines.
- Stakeholder rounds. Every additional decision-maker in the review process multiplies the revision timeline.
- Agency reputation. A firm with 30 years and a trophy case commands a premium. You are paying for certainty, not just craft.
Web Design & Development
A website built on a purchased theme and a website built from scratch on a custom WordPress or headless CMS are not the same product. One is an apartment you rent. The other is a house you own and can modify structurally.
The most common mistake buyers make is scoping a website by page count. Page count is almost irrelevant. What drives cost is design complexity, custom functionality, system integrations, and the strategic thinking that goes into information architecture before design begins.
For most growing businesses, a well-built custom WordPress site falls between $8,000 and $40,000. Below that you're getting a theme. Above it you're getting custom engineering or e-commerce at scale.
See Our Web Work →- Custom vs. template. A bespoke design built to your brand adds significant hours versus adapting an existing theme.
- E-commerce functionality. A product catalog, inventory management, and checkout flow can triple the scope of a standard marketing site.
- Content creation. If the agency writes the copy too, budget 30 to 50% more than the design-only scope.
- Third-party integrations. CRMs, booking systems, membership portals, and ERPs all require custom development work.
- SEO architecture. Building for search from day one requires additional strategic and technical work upfront.
Working With MIKEADV
We handle logo design, web development, SEO, and AEO under one roof. One team, one conversation, one system. Free audit within 24 hours.
SEO & AEO
SEO is the most misunderstood service in the industry. Most businesses have been burned by an agency that promised page one rankings, charged $500 a month, and delivered nothing measurable.
Real SEO is not a one-time task. Anything under $1,000 per month is either highly localized work, an automated service with minimal human input, or someone who will be gone in six months.
For most growing businesses in competitive markets, a meaningful SEO retainer runs $1,500 to $5,000 per month. MIKEADV offers 6, 12, and 24-month plans through the NONETOONE system, built for local SEO, map pack rankings, and AI search visibility.
See Our SEO Plans →- Market competitiveness. Ranking for "Boston plumber" costs more than ranking for "artisan soap maker New Hampshire."
- Content volume. More articles and more keywords per month means more hours of research and writing.
- Link building ambition. Quality backlinks from real publications require real outreach. They cannot be faked sustainably.
- AEO layer. Optimizing for AI-generated answers on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews adds a new strategic layer on top of traditional SEO.
- Technical complexity. Large or poorly structured sites require more ongoing maintenance before content gains can build.
Packaging Design
Packaging design is the one marketing material your customer actually holds in their hands. It is doing more selling than any ad you will ever run.
A single label design from a qualified designer runs $1,500 to $5,000. A full product line with multiple SKUs, regulatory compliance layouts, dieline creation, and 3D mockups runs $5,000 to $25,000+.
FDA compliance, required for food, beverage, supplements, and cosmetics, is not optional and should be built into the design from day one, not retrofitted after the fact.
See Our Packaging Work →- Number of SKUs. Each additional product variant requires its own layout, dieline, and file set while maintaining brand consistency across the line.
- Package format complexity. A flat label is simpler than a shrink sleeve or a multi-panel folding carton with special finishes.
- Regulatory compliance. FDA-mandated panels require careful layout and ongoing accuracy across every SKU.
- 3D renders and shelf simulation. Seeing your product on a shelf before it prints is far cheaper than reprinting 10,000 units.
Graphic Design & Brand Assets
Brand assets, stationery, brochures, presentations, signage, vehicle wraps, trade show booths, are typically priced per asset or as a bundled toolkit.
A professionally designed business card starts at $350. A presentation deck template built to your brand runs $1,500 to $4,000. A full stationery suite runs $2,500 to $6,000. Trade show booth design runs $5,000 to $20,000+ before any production costs. These numbers assume someone who knows what they are doing is doing the work from scratch.
Businesses with ongoing asset needs often benefit from a monthly design retainer, a fixed number of hours at a reduced rate, with a designer who knows the brand deeply enough to execute without extensive re-briefing.
See Our Graphic Design →- Custom vs. template-adapted. Building from scratch to a brand system takes longer but produces far better results.
- Print specification complexity. Special finishes, foil, emboss, spot UV, die-cut, require additional file preparation and vendor coordination.
- Volume and turnaround. Rush timelines and high-volume asset production both carry premiums. Plan ahead where you can.
Food Photography
Food photography pricing comes down to what's included beyond the camera. A photographer who shows up and shoots costs one amount. A photographer who brings food styling, prop sourcing, art direction, professional retouching, and multi-format delivery costs significantly more and produces a completely different result.
A half-day shoot with a qualified photographer and basic food styling starts around $1,200 and goes to $3,500. A full-day shoot with a complete food styling team, 20+ dishes, and 40 retouched images runs $4,500 to $8,000. Multi-day campaign productions run $8,000 to $15,000+. Below $1,200 you are in amateur territory and it will show.
Phone photos cost you nothing to take and everything to publish.
See Our Photography →- Food styling. Professional food styling is what separates images that look like food from images that create cravings.
- Number of dishes and setups. Each setup takes time to light, style, and shoot correctly. Rushing produces mediocre images regardless of talent.
- Post-production scope. The number of retouched final images and the depth of retouching required are major time drivers after the shoot day.
- Video and drone add-ons. Adding short-form video or aerial footage to a photography day can increase the total scope by 40 to 80%.
Video Production
Video pricing swings more than any other service because the variables are so extreme. A 30-second social reel shot on a mirrorless camera and edited in a day costs $1,500 to $3,000. A 90-second brand film with a director, cinematographer, sound recordist, drone unit, and full post-production costs $15,000 to $60,000+.
The most important thing to understand: the cost of the shoot day is rarely the largest cost. Pre-production and post-production together typically represent 60 to 70% of total project cost.
An agency that quotes you only for the shoot day without accounting for pre and post is either inexperienced or building in scope creep.
- Crew size. A one-person crew and a five-person crew produce different results. The difference is most visible in lighting quality and sound.
- Talent and location. Paid talent, location permits, and set design are hard costs that go directly into the budget.
- Number of deliverables. Each cut-down version, 30s, 15s, square format, vertical, is additional editing time. Budget for every format you actually need.
- Motion graphics and animation. Animated titles, lower thirds, and kinetic text add post-production time that is often underestimated at the quoting stage.
- Music licensing. Licensed music for commercial use is not free. Budget $200 to $2,000+ per track depending on usage rights and exclusivity.
Plan Your Full Year Marketing Budget Ahead
Marketing is 100% tax deductible as a business expense. If you know what your income is going to look like this year, you can plan your marketing spend in advance, and lower your taxable base at the same time.
Every dollar you invest in logo design, your website, SEO, photography, or video production reduces your net income before tax. That means the real cost of your marketing is lower than the invoice price. Talk to your accountant about how to structure it, and use this guide to plan what you actually need.
Questions to Ask Every Agency Before You Sign
6 QuestionsIs This a Flat Fee or Will There Be Additional Costs?
Get confirmation in writing that the quoted price is all-in, or get a complete list of every potential additional charge before work begins.
Who Actually Does the Work?
The senior team presents. The junior team executes. Ask specifically which person will be working on your project and look at their individual work, not the agency portfolio.
How Many Revision Rounds Are Included?
What exactly constitutes a revision versus a change order? This is where most projects go over budget. Get it defined in the contract before you start.
Who Owns the Files When the Project Ends?
You should own everything you paid for. Some agencies retain IP or charge licensing fees for ongoing use of work you commissioned. Read the contract.
Can You Show Me Work in My Category?
A portfolio full of tech startups tells you nothing about their ability to design for food, hospitality, or retail. Ask specifically for relevant category experience.
What Does Success Look Like at 6 Months?
If an agency can't answer this with specific metrics and milestones, they're selling you effort, not results. Any serious agency should be able to define what winning looks like before the project starts.

Social Media Design
Social media content exists on a spectrum from "someone schedules stock images with captions" to "a design studio creates original brand content every month." The price difference is enormous. So is the result.
At $500 to $1,500 per month you get consistency. At $1,500 to $4,000 per month you get custom-designed content that looks like a brand. At $4,000 to $10,000+ per month you get a full content production operation.
The question is whether social media is a brand-building channel or a conversion channel for your business. The answer should determine how much you invest.
One thing worth knowing: below $500 per month you are almost certainly getting a scheduling tool with a human name on it. Real content requires real people. Budget accordingly.
